  • Good luck trying to call any of these Walmarts to check on current ONP policies. I’ve spent the last 4 hours calling every Walmart from Hagerstown MD to Roanoke VA, that is listed here as allowing ONP. After several tries I was able to reach a person at four of them. All the rest, the phone just rings and rings and no one answers. I know we’re supposed to call first and check but how do you do that when no one answers their phones?

    Reply

    • Of the four at which I was able to reach a person (#2790 in Hagerstown MD, #4423 in Martinsburg WV, and #3344 and #4514 in Winchester VA), all of them confirmed that they (still) allow ONP. I’m still trying to reach someone at the rest of them and will report back with any results.

    • This isn’t meant to be a jab and any person. Have a bit of “walk a mile in my shoes” for the managers. Their job isn’t to answer a bunch of phone calls every night about RV permission. They are under a lot of stress from under performing employees, employee sick time, customer complaints, safety and theft. At the same time they could inform their employees of the policy or add a phase in any automated greeting.

      Reply

  • Does anyone maintain a count of Walmarts that allow ONP vs those that don’t? It would be interesting to see a chart of those that allow vs those that don’t over, say, the past 5 or 10 years, to show a clear trend that I’m guessing wouldn’t be very encouraging for the future of Walmart overnight parking.

  • Good morning everybody, I have a different kind of question that I’m hoping somebody can help me with. I somehow managed to go from the Walmart locator site to my Google maps by a click and now my Google map is full of all the Walmart locations all around the country. I’ve tried doing a new search in Google maps, shutting it down and rebooting, shutting the phone down and rebooting, even gone through the Walmart locator website, still no luck. I can’t figure out how to clear that off.
Has anyone else had this issue or is in some way familiar with what to do? Sure would appreciate any help.
Thanks and have a great day!

I haven’t had my Google maps opened in a few days now, maybe it just needed some time? ‍♀️
The first sentence in your instructions said to remove the location icons from your map, did you mean the Google maps or the map on the Walmart locator page?
I’m just wondering in the event this happens again.
But I absolutely love the Walmart locator, so handy! I’m sticking it out and hopefully this will work itself out.
        Maybe it already has?! 🙂

I looked it up and lodging in a motor vehicle is prohibited anywhere in the city (even a driveway) other than a designated campground or RV park.

The police said there are serious crime and safety issues taking place and they are being swarmed with van lifers and dockers. They didn’t arrest us, but we were given an ordinance citation and trespassed from the Walmart property.

  • I just inquired about overnight parking at a Walmart for the first time and I thought I’d share the information learned and impressions.

Using the map I saw that Store #2814 (Miami area) was listed as permitting overnight parking. When I arrived at 7:30pm (Monday) I saw there were several dozen high-roof vans and a few semi-trucks in the lot. I didn’t see any “no overnight parking” or “no camping” signs.

Realizing that the map listing on this site isn’t anything official from Walmart and that Walmart’s in big cities are less likely to permit overnight parking, I decided to ask for permission.

From everything I have read over the years, you are supposed to ask the “store manager”. As a business person, I’ve always thought that to be a strange concept because THE store manager doesn’t work every hour that the store is open and they are presumably a busy person.

Regardless, with a cart full of items I had just purchased I asked the security person if she knew if the manager was available and that I’d like to ask him or her if it would be okay to park my van in the lot overnight. She said to talk to customer service.

I waited in the customer service line and repeated my spiel, asking if the manager is available.

Not to my surprise at all, they didn’t summon the “store manager”. The customer service rep responded by asking if it was a car, and that a car would probably be okay. I repeated that it is a van. She then asked a co-worker, who may have been the on-duty manager or a customer service supervisor, or maybe just a more experienced co-worker – she was working behind the customer service counter.

The 2nd person said, “No, if you are there too long security will tow your vehicle. Mainly they just have problems with truck though”. She said I could ask the person in the security truck, it’s really up to them.

When I went outside I didn’t see anybody in a security truck, though it was a big lot and still a lot of cars so maybe they were around somewhere.

In any event, it seems like this Walmart falls into a grey area. I’m not advocating to delist this site as green unless that’s customary when this happens. I highly suspect if I had parked there for one night it would have been fine and that’s probably why there were all those high-roof vans there. It seems like the issue is store management is leaving it to the discretion of security rather than having a clear policy about it. Security may not care if it’s 1 night, but if so, the person I talked to wasn’t equipped to make that distinction.

Has anyone else run into this kind of grey area situation?

they mainly have problems with trucks.

  • Yreka CA was an easy stay but not very nice place. Walmart is struggling their w/lack of good workers so long crazy lines…and, as always – take heed to some of the harassing Walmart employees, targeting travelers and homeless people. The idea is to run off both. Bloody sad commentary in our times. It’s done very nonchalauntly by parking right next to you an identified vehicle w/someone resting in it; the harasser will boom their distasteful music loud and they find another employee to join by yelling at each other across the parking lot – all of this they choose to park next to you out of the entire bloody parking lot Walmart so kindly provides. Redding has security. Anderson is very highly recommended for overnighting, the place is nice. Skip Red Bluff no matter what – no morals, selfish, stupid customers. Utter monsters. Both customers and Walmart employees are rude outside the lot – harassers, and unsafe people. I could swear I was in little mexico but w/white people…WTF!

  • I am in Grants Pass, OR – A town…not as nice as Roseburg…sigh! This Walmart has security so I didn’t risk it. It’s utter nonsense this town has done this b/c the weather is tough, the mountains are like nothing I’ve ever seen before and I’m well traveled. These mountains are worse than a rollercoaster ride; enough to burn you out mentally in one hour, forget about going over them in the snow – even though I’m doing this route on a failing shifting E Solenoid (tranny) – my Toyota has well over 400,000+ miles. I found a 24 hour store across the street to overnight it, saw a cop twice but I’m still good b/c I blend in well.

  • I am overnighting it at Roseburg, OR. The map was X’d out. I looked for security flashing lights, ah…nah – no security! I parked near employees, they can’t really see me, my car is small & it’s only me. There are very few RVs way down at the far end of the building. With a roller coaster like steep hill the elevation is 500 give or take & it’s about to get much worse, like 4,000 feet up the Sysciyou. Had car trouble after Cottage Grove, OR. I stopped by Drain, OR near a Pilot truck stop at an auto repair & long tow shop (Loughhead’s Automotive on Ceder St – they saved me in many ways even financially. Honest sweet & smart people.

  • I am at Cottage Grove, OR Walmart overnighting it, waiting to pass the Sysciyou mountains…so far so good! The key to the Walmart locations you have x’d out is to nonchalauntly ask if they have security or keep an eye out right before dark and you should see them if not the likely of being bothered goes way down. Park next to overnight workers if you have a car, blend in. There are RVs and Trucks parked here too. Wifi is not so hot unless you’re up close.

  • Anyone in Southern California?
Last time we were there the more rural dessert cities allowed parking. They were all nice about it too.
    Perris, California
    Riverside, California
    Hemet, California
Those are the ones we went too and they were very polite and no one bothered us. We parked in the far end of the parking lot under a tree so in the morning it didn’t get too hot before we were ready to leave.
Also in Hemet, California is a quiet rv park. They allowed us to park in our van and set up a tent. We stayed there about a month while I temporarily got a job at Ross Distribution Center which is a factory in Perris, California. Did this to increase our funds.
Also stayed at Perris Lake Campgrounds but you have a maximum stay and must leave for a certain amount of time before you can go back.
It’s nice there and the bathrooms/showers are clean, staff is nice and it’s usually quiet there & reasonably priced.
Hope this helps anyone planning to stay in these areas.

    • At Perris Campgrounds we would go park in the parking lot and take our backpacks like we were hiking and go to the showers in an area not occupied by campers so we could get in and out without being noticed and get a hot shower in. Only had to pay a few dollars to get into the park. But definitely worth it!

  • Went in and got permission and a couple of hours later, security, very aggressively told me to leave, telling me I didn’t get permission, that he’s security, and I’m just saying whatever I want. Luckily, though the store was closed 20 minutes earlier, I immediately called and the assistant manager picked up the phone and after I shakily explained what happened, she went and talked to him. Mesa AZ location.

    • There are multiple locations in Mesa, most identified as not allowing overnight parking. What store in particular are you referring to? If I read your comment correctly, you were allowed to park because you obtained permission from store management.

  • Any Highway Patrol officer will advise you to pull over anywhere it is safe and sleep if you are too tired to drive and that includes ANY Walmart parking lot in any city in America.

    • I disagree. You cannot park on private property just because you are too tired to drive.

9 07 21 – Customer Service desk personnel told us that overnight parking is no longer allowed. There are NO SIGNS anywhere in the parking lots stating that. There were a number of RVs in the parking lot at 4:30PM but most left before dark.
